Box Score WAUKESHA, Wis. – A cold shooting performance plagued the Grinnell College women's basketball team as it lost a 60-46 Midwest Conference contest to Carroll University Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers, who fell to 4-3 in the league and 5-6 overall, shot just 33.3 percent from the field (19-of-57), including 22.2 percent from 3-point land (4-of-18). Additionally, Grinnell went to the free throw line just seven times (making four shots for 57.1 percent) while Carroll was 20-of-24 from the charity stripe.
Michelle Briggs '13 posted a double-double for Grinnell with a game-high 15 points to go along with 10 rebounds. She also blocked three shots.
Tolu Alabi '13 scored 10 points and had seven boards,
Anne Boldt '16 and
Cristal Coleman '15 tallied eight points each and
Alissa Hirsh '16 dished out six assists. Boldt also had two steals.
Nicolette Rini scored 14 points for Carroll, which improved to 4-3 in the MWC and 5-5 in all games.
Grinnell led just once in the game, that at 2-0 when
Abby Jaeger '14 hit a jumper to open the contest. It was still a tight game, with Carroll leading 17-15, before the hosts went on a 7-0 run to break things open. However, Alabi hit a pair of baskets before halftime to bring the Pioneers within 24-19 at the break.
Grinnell twice came within a point in the second half, the first time at 24-23 on a layup by Briggs with 18:52 remaining and again at 27-26 when Boldt drained a 3-pointer at the 16:40 mark. Carroll answered Boldt's shot with a key 7-0 run to go ahead 34-26 with 13:33 remaining.
The Pioneers still trailed by eight with 6:35 left before Coleman hit a 3-pointer and Alabi made a layup to make it 40-37 with 4:19 left. However, Carroll responded with a nine-point run and never looked back.
Grinnell is on the road again this Wednesday with a league contest at Cornell College in Mount Vernon. The Rams are currently unbeaten and ranked 23rd in the nation by D3hoops.com.
