Pioneers fall on Senior Day to MWC preseason favorite St. Norbert

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College women's basketball team had a tough Senior Day on Saturday, falling 62-47 to preseason Midwest Conference favorite St. Norbert College at Darby Gymnasium.

The Pioneers, who fell to 8-8 in the league and 10-11 overall, got out to a quick 6-2 lead on 3-pointers by Karen Gogins '13 and Anne Boldt '16. However, St. Norbert rallied and took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Lana Tomashek with 14:50 left in the half.

Michelle Briggs '13 had team-highs of 14 points, nine rebounds and four blocks for the Pioneers, while Cristal Coleman '15 added eight points and Kelly Clarke '13 poured in seven.

Tolu Alabi '13 added seven rebounds and four assists, while Alissa Hirsh '16 also dished out four assists.

Krista Hawkinson scored 21 points for the Green Knights, who are 11-5 in the MWC and 14-7 in all games.

Though St. Norbert took the lead to stay on Tomashek's trey, Grinnell hung close and made it a three-point game when Coleman drained a 3-pointer to make it 22-19 with 4:47 to go in the half.

However, the visitors answered with a 9-0 run to go up 31-19 and were ahead 33-22 at intermission. Grinnell never got closer than 11 the rest of the way.

The Pioneers close out the home portion of their 2012-13 season when they host Cornell College at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Darby Gymnasium.
