Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College men's soccer team collected its first Midwest Conference victory of the season Saturday afternoon, rolling past Beloit College 4-1 at Springer Field.
Victor Ghazal '16 had two goals for the Pioneers, giving him a team-high seven, and also had an assist.
Elliot Meyer '15 also scored a goal, his second of the year, and
Nicholas Brule '17 tallied his first collegiate goal.
The Pioneers are now 1-2 in the league and 3-6 in all contests, while Beloit fell to 0-1 in the MWC and 0-7-1 overall.
Major May '17 played the first half at keeper for Grinnell and had a save, while
Isaiah Tyree '15 collected four saves in the second half without surrendering a goal.
Meyer opened the scoring in the sixth minute after Ghazal took a shot from the far side of the box that was deflected by the keeper. Meyer got the ball and fired a shot in the goal on the near side.
In the 23rd minute, Ghazal scored his first goal.
Joseph Brown '15 began the play when he fed the ball to
Ezra Edgerton '16, who was streaking down the far side. Edgerton crossed the ball to Ghazal, who headed it into the goal from inside the box.
Grinnell made it 3-0 in the 29th minute when Brown assisted Brule's goal. On the play, Brown fed Brule on the far side. He ended up with a one-on-one with the keeper, then fired a shot on the ground into the near corner of the net.
Beloit then scored in the 37th minute to make it a 3-1 halftime lead for the hosts. The lone goal of the second half came in the 80th minute when Ghazal took a pass on the far side and made a nifty move to shake the defender after which he fired into the goal.
Grinnell outshot the visitors 18-7, with Ghazal taking six shots, Meyer and Brown three apiece and
Michael Hurley '16 two.
The Pioneers travel to Galesburg, Ill., to take on Knox College next Saturday.
