Box Score 3 GALESBURG, Ill. – The Grinnell College volleyball team celebrated its first victory of the season Saturday with a three-set sweep at Knox College.
Scores, in favor of the winners, were 25-21, 25-21 and 25-18.
Claire Weidman '15 and
Olivia Fromm '17 had 11 and 10 kills, respectively, for Grinnell. Fromm had an impressive .500 hitting efficiency.
Lindsay Fujimoto '15 added 14 assists and
Jeanette Au '16 added 10.
Sydney McClendon '16 came up with two service aces and 21 digs, while
Evelyn Weidman '17 contributed three blocks.
Grinnell improved to 1-1 in the Midwest Conference with the win, while Knox fell to 1-1 in the league and 3-12 in all matches.
The first set was tied 7-all before the Pioneers went on a seven-point run behind the serving of McClendon. She had two aces during the run as the Pioneers cruised to victory.
Grinnell led most of the second set before the Prairie Fire rallied to force several ties, the last at 19-all. Grinnell then scored three unanswered points, with two coming off Fromm's serve and another by her kill, en route to victory.
Fujimoto helped serve the Pioneers to a 4-0 lead in the third set. After Knox closed within 10-9, the Pioneers went on a critical 4-1 run that included kills by Fromm and
Claire Weidman. Knox never got closer than three points after that.
On Saturday night, the Pioneers played two matches in Oskaloosa. They fell 25-14, 25-16 and 25-18 to Waldorf College and 25-9, 25-16 and 25-20 to William Penn University.
In the Waldorf match,
Claire Weidman had 11 kills and hit .360 and Fujimoto had 14 assists.
Christine Hood '17 added two ace serves and 11 digs, while
Rebecca Rasmussen '16 and
Claire Weidman tallied two blocks each.
Claire Weidman again had 11 kills against William Penn and Fujimoto 16 assists. McClendon came up with 12 digs, while
Evelyn Weidman,
Liz Nelson '17 and
Ariel Lepito '17 had two blocks apiece.
Grinnell, 1-19 overall, jumps back into MWC play this Friday against Lawrence University at Appleton, Wis.
