Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The home field was to the liking of the Grinnell College men's soccer team, as the Pioneers won their 2013 Springer Field opener with a 3-2 decision against Buena Vista University Sunday.
Victor Ghazal '16 scored two goals for Grinnell, giving him a team-high four for the year, and
Benjamin Warner '15 had the other.
Ghazal scored in the 14th minute after corralling a shot on goal by
Joseph Brown '15 and putting it into the net. Buena Vista scored in the 25th minute to tie things, but Warner came back with a goal in the 42nd minute to give the Pioneers a 2-1 halftime lead. On the play, Warner took a shot from just outside the box on the far side, and the keeper fumbled it as the ball worked its way into the net.
Grinnell went up 3-1 in the 62nd minute on Ghazal's second goal. At the top of the box, Brown left a quick pass for the streaking Ghazal to the far side. Ghazal ended up with a one-on one with the keeper and fired it past him for the goal.
Buena Vista managed a goal in the 82nd minute, but the Pioneers hung on from there for the win.
Grinnell dominated the shots battle 26-8, with Ghazal taking 10 of those, Brown and
Benjamin Charney '15 taking four apiece and
Michael Hurley '16 getting three.
Keeper
Isaiah Tyree '15 recorded two saves for the Pioneers, who are 1-3 on the season. Buena Vista is also 1-3.
The Pioneers are home again this Saturday when Nebraska Wesleyan University visits Springer Field. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
