Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – Combining a stifling defense with an explosive offense, the Grinnell College men's soccer team sailed to a milestone 8-0 victory over Cornell College Wednesday afternoon at Springer Field.
The shutout was Grinnell's 10th of the season, matching the program record set in 1994. The Pioneers' 36 shots rank third in school history, and the goal total is the most for Grinnell since a contest in 2011.
The win pushed Grinnell to 4-2-3 in the Midwest Conference and 8-3-5 overall as the Pioneers posted their sixth shutout in a row and stayed in for the league tourney. Cornell fell to 1-7-1 in the league and 3-12-2 overall.
Keeper
Isaiah Tyree '15, already the nation's leader in save percentage, added to that statistic as he recorded two saves in 76 minutes.
Elliot Meyer '15 opened the scoring in the ninth minute when a shot trickled into the box. He beat the keeper to the ball and made a diving kick into the net.
Caelum Froikin '16 added a goal in the 19th minute.
Michael Hurley '16 made a great pass to
Benjamin Warner '15, whose cross was deflected in the box. Froikin was there to punch in into the net.
Artis Curiskis '18 added a goal in the 28th minute on an assist by
Antonio Dimarco '18, as the latter delivered a great pass in the box.
Grinnell made it 4-0 in the 32nd minute as Dimarco scored after dribbling down the sideline and then beat his defender before taking a shot.
In the 34th minute,
Ezra Edgerton '16 added a goal. Hurley took a free kick just to the right of the box and lobbed it over a mass of defenders, allowing Edgerton to head it in.
The score remained 5-0 through halftime before the Pioneers added a goal in the 57th minute on a goal by
Nicholas Brule '17. On the play, Warner took a free kick from just outside the box, leading
Joseph Brown '15, who crossed it to Brule who tapped it into the net.
In the 63rd minute, Brule scored again. He received a pass on the near side, took a few dribbles and fired a shot from just inside the box.
Froikin finished off the scoring in the 87th minute with a goal off a rebound.
Of Grinnell's 36 shots, Meyer and Curiskis each had five, Hurley took four and Warner, Dimarco and Brule three each.
The Pioneers, on the other hand, gave up just four shots.
Grinnell finishes regular-season play Saturday at Ripon College. Kickoff is at 11 a.m.
