Pioneer men's tennis team wins 3 of 4 matches

GRINNELL, Iowa – Playing in two sites with a split squad, the Grinnell College men's tennis team claimed three of four matches Saturday.

Grinnell shut out two foes at the Charles Benson Bear '39 Recreation and Athletic Center Field House, beating Carroll University and Cornell College by 9-0 scores.

The Pioneers also played nationally-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College and Morningside College in St. Peter, Minn. Gustavus Adolphus, ranked 18th in the nation and fourth regionally, beat the Pioneers – who are 15th in the region – by a 9-0 score. Grinnell bounced back to topple Morningside College 8-1.

Singles winners against Carroll were Cole Miller '17 (7-5, 6-4), C.J. Ray '16 (6-0, 6-1), Charlie Wilhelm '15 (6-0, 6-0), Rob Storrick '15 (6-0, 6-0), Bryson Cale '16 (6-2, 6-1) and Caleb Kumar '16 (6-1, 6-2). Doubles wins came from the teams of Ray-Miller (8-1), Storrick-Cale (8-6) and Wilhelm-Beau Bressler '16 (8-5).

Against Cornell, singles wins came from Miller (6-1, 6-0), Wilhelm (6-2, 6-1), Cale (6-2, 6-0), Kumar (6-3, 6-0), Ameer Shujjah '16 (6-1, 6-1) and Ryan Hautzinger '15 (6-2, 6-1). Doubles winners were the teams of Ray-Miller (9-8), Storrick-Cale (8-5) and Wilhelm-Bressler (8-1).

Grinnell swept doubles against Morningside with wins by the teams of Elliott Czarnecki '15-Tommy Pitcher '17 (8-1), Emilio Gomez '15-Tracy Johnson '16 (8-0) and Will Hamilton '17-Sam Catanzaro '16 (8-4).

Grinnell won two through six singles with Pitcher (6-2, 6-4), Johnson (6-1, 6-0), Catanzaro (6-0, 6-3), Hamilton (6-0, 6-0) and John Gernon '15 (6-1, 6-0).

The Pioneers, 9-3 overall and 1-0 in the Midwest Conference South Division, play as a split squad again next Saturday with home matches against Westminster and Grand View as well as contests against St. Norbert and Ripon in De Pere, Wis.
