Pioneer baseball team takes 2 of 3 from Central over the weekend

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Grinnell College baseball team took two of three games from Central College to open the 2014 campaign over the weekend.

On Saturday, the Pioneers used timely hitting and strong pitching to beat the Dutch 3-1. Matt Godinsky '16 had three hits for Grinnell, including two doubles, while Eli Freese '15 belted a home run.

Will Pahos '14 tossed five-hit ball and struck out five over six innings, while Andrew Kelley '14 gave up no hits and fanned four the rest of the game to get the win.

Central took a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning before Freese blasted a two-run round-tripper in the eighth to plate Kainoa Inafuku '14, who had walked. Grinnell got an insurance run in the ninth when Godinsky scored on a wild pitch.

The Pioneers pounded out 11 hits in Sunday's opening game en route to a 12-8 victory. Inafuku led the way with three hits, including a grand slam homer and double. Niko Takayesu '17 added a triple, while Walker Bell '15, Matt Hammond '17 and Godinsky all doubled.

Graham Fisher '16 was the winning pitcher, striking out four in three innings.

Central scored two runs in the top of the first, but Grinnell came back with a run on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Mack '16 in the bottom of the frame.

The Pioneers broke the game open in the second with a seven-run output. Inafuku's grand slam, the first homer of his career, led the barrage. Bell and Hammond added RBI doubles to the attack.

Central scratched out solo runs in the fourth and fifth innings to make it 8-4 before the Pioneers tallied three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Freese had an RBI single during the inning and Adam Renfro '16 also had an RBI.

Central tallied four runs in the sixth and Grinnell got a run in the bottom of the inning on a run-scoring single by Ryan Penaflor '16.

In the second game Sunday, Central earned a 13-6 win. Godinsky had two hits for Grinnell, including a homer. Freese also homered and Matt Schaeffer '14 added a double.

Central scored twice in the second inning before Grinnell came back with a run when Steven Petritis '15 was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning.

After the Dutch scored in the top of the third, Grinnell tied it with two runs in the bottom of the frame on Freese's two-run bomb.

The Pioneers went ahead 4-3 in the fourth on Inafuku's RBI, but Central responded with two runs in the top of the fifth. The Pioneers retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Godinsky's two-run homer made it 6-5.

However, Central scored three runs in the sixth and five in the seventh to pull away. Max Jacobson '14, the third of four Grinnell pitchers, suffered the loss.

The Pioneers are off until this coming Sunday when they play Vassar in Orlando, Fla.
