Tinkham fans 16 to tie Pioneer strikeout record in win over IC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Sam Tinkham '16 tied a Grinnell College baseball program record by striking out 16 batters in a 9-2 victory over Illinois College in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday.
 
Tinkham's total matched the previous mark established in 1977 by Tom Richmond and again by Jake Chavez in 1999.
 
Tinkham allowed just seven hits and issued two walks while improving to 3-1.
 
Ryan Penaflor '16, Matt Hammond '17 and Jacob Beecher '16 each had three hits for Grinnell. Walker Bell '15 had a homer in the contest, while Hammond had two doubles and Penaflor, Anthony Mack '16, Beecher and Kainoa Inafuku '14 added one each.
 
Grinnell got on the board in the second with Bell's solo homer, and added two more runs in the third when Niko Takayesu '17 scored on an error and Mack crossed the plate on Hammond's RBI single.
 
Grinnell scored twice more in the fourth when Penaflor's two-run single scored Takayesu and Teague Towner '17. The Pioneers added another run in the fifth when Beecher's single scored Hammond, and got one more run in the sixth when Penaflor's single allowed Inafuku to score.
 
Grinnell got two more runs in the eighth as Hammond's RBI double scored Penaflor, and Beecher's sacrifice fly allowed Steven Petritis '16 to score.
 
The Pioneers lost the opener 7-1 despite opening the scoring with a run in the second as Inafuku's bases-loaded walk allowed Matt Godinsky '16 to score. However, the hosts tied it in the third and took the lead for good in the fourth.
 
Will Pahos '14 was tagged with the loss.
 
Grinnell is now 4-2 in the Midwest Conference South and 11-13 overall, while the Blueboys are now 6-4 in league play and 17-10 overall.
 
The teams square off again Sunday in a pair of games.
