Box Score DES MOINES, Iowa – The Grinnell College volleyball team celebrated its first victory of the season Friday night, beating the AIB College of Business in straight sets. Scores were 25-19, 32-30 and 25-18.
Natalie Duncombe '15 had 10 kills and hit .240 for the Pioneers, while
Sydney Vrecenar '18 had nine and
Claire Weidman '15 and
Sarah Garringer '18 six each. Garringer hit .333.
Margaret Giles '18 dished out 29 assists.
Lindsay Fujimoto '15 had 20 digs and Weidman 10. Weidman also served up four aces.
AIB led the first set 7-4 before Grinnell went on an 11-2 run to break things open.
Sydney McClendon '16 served six points during that span, and Fujimoto added three points as the Pioneers pulled away to victory.
AIB led the second set 13-4 before Grinnell raced back, eventually tying things at 14-all on Garringer's serve. The hosts led 30-29 later on when the Pioneers tallied three points in a row, the last two on Weidman's serve.
The hosts shot out to a 7-2 lead in the third set, but again Grinnell came back. The contest was tied 15-all a bit later when Fujimoto served four points in a row, two completed by Duncombe kills, to put the Pioneers ahead 20-15 as they worked their way to victory.
Grinnell, 1-5 on the season, will compete in the Loras College Invitational on Saturday.
