Pioneers just miss MWC Team Tourney title as several players etch names in record books

Grinnell 6, Lake Forest 0
St. Norbert 5, Grinnell 3

MADISON, Wis. – Grinnell College's women's tennis team advanced to the title match with a shutout win and then lost an epic battle to St. Norbert College at the 2017 Midwest Conference Team Tournament Thursday.

The Pioneers opened the day with a 6-0 blanking of Lake Forest College. Grinnell opened on a solid note, with doubles wins by the teams of Judith Fan '19-Amelia Cogan '19 (8-1), Anushka Joshi '18-Shanaz Daneshdoost '17 (8-2) and Lily Hamilton '19-Sydney Banach '19 (8-0).

Grinnell kept it up in singles, finishing off the shutout with wins by Fan at No. 1 (6-3, 6-1), Banach at No. 5 (6-3, 6-1) and Brenda Guan '20 at No. 6 (6-0, 6-1).

That led to the three-plus hour showdown with St. Norbert in the championship match.

St. Norbert led 2-1 after doubles, with Grinnell's win an 8-2 decision by Fan and Cogan at No. 1.

Fan tied things at 2-all with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles. St. Norbert regained the lead, only to have the Pioneers tie it at 3-all with Hamilton's 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles.

However, St. Norbert won two more matches to secure the 5-3 win and earn the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.

For the Pioneers, it was a record-setting year on several fronts. Cogan set a school record for most doubles wins in a season with 27, while Fan is second in that department with 25.

Fan also posted 23 singles wins this season, which is third-most in Pioneer history. Additionally, Cogan boosted her career doubles wins total to 49, which is 10th-best at Grinnell.

Grinnell finishes its 2016-17 campaign with a 15-7 mark, while the Green Knights advance with a 21-13 record.
