Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa –
Antonio DiMarco '18 had a banner scoring day as the Grinnell College men's soccer led Westminster College until the waning minutes before the Blue Jays rallied for a 4-3 victory at Springer Field.
DiMarco recorded a hat trick, scoring three goals in the first half to bring his career total to 18. It was the most goals scored in a game by a Pioneer since 2015, when DiMarco tallied four against Crown College.
DiMarco's goals gave Grinnell a 3-2 halftime lead over a team that has qualified for the NCAA Division III National Tournament five years in a row. The Pioneers maintained that lead until Westminster scored in the 79th minute to tie it and added the eventual game-winner in the 86th minute.
DiMarco opened the scoring in the 12th minute when he ripped a shot into the net from the left side on
Jasper Yang's '21 assist. It was Yang's first collegiate assist.
However, the Blue Jays scored in the 23rd and 41st minutes to go ahead 2-1.
The Pioneers were not deterred, as a foul in the box set up DiMarco's penalty kick in the 44th minute. DiMarco easily netted the ball past the diving efforts of the goal keeper.
Grinnell wasn't done, though, as DiMarco scored with 7 seconds remaining when
Artis Curiskis '18 delivered a pass from the center of the field to the left side, where DiMarco took it put it in the net. It was the first assist of the season for Curiskis and 16th of his career, good for fourth on the Pioneers' all-time chart.
Westminster improved to 1-1-1 with the win, while the Pioneers are now 1-2. Grinnell entertains North Central (Ill.) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Springer Field.
