Pioneers advance to MWC title match before seeing superb season draw to a close

Grinnell 5, Cornell 0
Lake Forest 5, Grinnell 0

MADISON, Wis. - Grinnell College's women's tennis team saw its stellar season draw to a close Friday, falling to Lake Forest in the title match after opening the day with a 5-0 semifinal win over Cornell College.

In the Cornell win, the Pioneers swept through doubles play with little trouble. Abby Nielsen '21 and Judith Fan '19 posted an 8-1 decision at the top spot, Isabel Green '22 teamed with Brenda Guan '20 to win 8-2 at No. 2 and the duo of Sara Amano '22-Lily Hamilton '19 won 8-1 at No. 3. The Pioneers finished off the victory as Nielsen won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and Fan earned a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 2.

Though losing the title match 5-0 against the Central Region's 17th-ranked team, the score was somewhat deceiving as Fan, Hamilton and Guan all won their first sets in singles and Nielsen was on her way to winning her second set before play was halted when Lake Forest clinched the victory.

Grinnell finished its season with a 16-8 record, the eighth-highest victory total in program history. Hamilton and Fan closed out superb careers as Hamilton's 70 singles wins rank fourth in program history and 56 doubles victories are ninth. Fan ranks 12th and 13th in singles and doubles wins with 48 and 64, respectively. Nielsen's 49 singles wins are 11th-best for the program and Guan's 30 rank 25th. Guan and Nielsen are 22nd and 23rd in doubles victories with 42 and 41.

Hamilton's 70.7 winning percentage in career singles play is 12th-best at Grinnell, while Fan ranks 18th in that category with a 65.8 percent winning clip. Fan also has the fourth-best doubles winning percentage at 73.0 percent.

On the season singles victory chart, Nielsen is sixth this year with 23, Amano ranks 12th with 21, Hamilton is 14th with 20 and Green is 23rd with 18. Green also ranks second in season doubles wins with 25, Amano is eighth with 22, Guan ranks 12th with 20 and Hamilton is 24th with 19.
