Box Score 4 JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - For the second year in a row, the Grinnell College volleyball team found perfection at the Illinois College Tournament.
The Pioneers kicked off their 2019 campaign in striking fashion over the weekend, winning all four of their matches to equal last year's performance at the event. Grinnell needed a big rally in its opener Friday, coming back from losses of 25-23 and 25-21 against Anderson University of Indiana before winning the match with decisive decisions of 25-14, 25-13 and 15-6.
The three set wins to finish that match began a 12-set winning streak for the Pioneers, who went on two sweep MacMurray College later Friday and both Trine University and Culver-Stockton College on Saturday. Match scores were 25-22, 25-22 and 25-21 against MacMurray, 25-20, 25-21 and 25-17 against Trine and 25-13, 25-12 and 25-14 in the contest against Culver-Stockton.
Two-time All-Midwest Conference performer
Kaylin Kuhn '21 was an All-Tournament Team selectio as was
Payton Lowrey '22.
Kuhn picked up where she left off last year, hitting a whopping .347 against Anderson with 24 kills in 49 swings. She also had 15 digs, while Lowrey and
Rachel Woock '23 had 16 each in that area.
Julianna Roth, also an All-MWC performer, tallied 41 assists. Grinnell served up 11 aces, including four by Lowrey, three from Kuhn and two each from Woock and Roth.
Kuhn kept up her hitting dominance against MacMurray, compiling a .375 efficiency with 19 kills in 40 tries. Woock had 10 kills. Lowrey led the digs charge with 16, Kuhn had 14 and Woock and
Emmy Nyquist '23 tallied 10 each. Nyquist added two aces and Roth 39 assists.Â
In the win over Trine, Kuhn had 10 kills, Roth 20 assists and
Hannah Taylor '21 five block assists. Lowrey and Kuhn led the digs charge with 15 and 11, respectively, while Woock served three aces.
To round out the tourney against Culver-Stockton, the Pioneers hit .280 as a team with Kuhn putting down 12 kills and hitting .370 while Woock hit .313. Roth had 27 assists, Woock 15 digs and Kuhn 11. Kuhn also had four block assists and Lowrey three aces serves.
Grinnell plays its first home match of the season Tuesday when Faith Baptist College of Ankeny visits Darby Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. test.
