Grinnell men's basketball team falls in regular-season finale to Illinois College

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - A big second half by the host school propelled Illinois College's men's basketball team to a 117-98 victory over Grinnell College Sunday afternoon.
 
Despite the setback, the Pioneers have still lived to fight another day as they've qualified for next weekend's Midwest Conference Tournament in Ripon, Wis.
 
Aiden Gilbert '23 had 16 points to lead Grinnell, 10-6 in the MWC and 16-8 overall. Patrick Simms '22 and David Bluder '25 were also in double figures with 12 and 10, respectively.
 
Simms added five assists, giving him 209 for his career which ranks 15th in program history. Morgan Walser '22 and Brady Vest '23 each had three steals and Walser, Vest and Tolu Johnson '25 added four boards each. Johnson also blocked two shots.
 
The first half was tight the entire way, with Simms hitting a 3-pointer in the waning seconds to bring Grinnell within 51-50.
 
Illinois College scored the first four points of the second half and never looked back while improving to 9-6 in the MWC and 13-10 overall.
 
The Pioneers will be the third seed in the MWC Tournament and will take on second-seeded Cornell College Friday.
