Grinnell women's cross country team fares well against some of nation's best

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Facing a collection of the nation's best, Grinnell College's women's cross country team put up a strong showing at the NCAA D-III Twilight Friday night.

Competing at LaVern Gibson Championship Course, which will also host nationals in a few months, Grinnell finished 21st in a 58-team field that included nine squads ranked nationally.

The Pioneers, ranked sixth in the Midwest Region tallied 637 points, fared well among teams in the region by beating fifth-ranked Loras College, No. 9 Illinois Wesleyan and 10th-ranked Aurora.

Hannah Roark '26 was Grinnell's top finisher, placing 132nd of 385 runners. She ran the 6-kilometer lighted course in 23 minutes, 43.0 seconds.

Morgan Karow '26 and Genevieve Madigan '28 were close behind, placing 143rd and 145th in 23:51.5 and 23:54.0, respectively. Madigan's time ranks 38th in program history.

Also scoring for Grinnell were Crystal Kaczmarczyk '25 and Emma Wharton-Hsieh '27. Kaczmarczyk was 160th in 24:07.3, the 47th-best time in program history, and Wharton-Hsieh finished in 24:43.3. Right behind them were Noelle Vu '28 (197th in 24:30.8) and Tennyson Shultz '28 (204th in 24:34.7).

Faith Duncan of Wilmington (Ohio) won in 21:02.8 and MIT, ranked fourth nationally, won the team crown with 45 points.

Grinnell also had a squad compete in the Open Division, as the Pioneers finished fifth of 16 teams with 164 points.

The Pioneers were led by Cindy Wang '28, who was 39th of 177 runners in 25:18.93. Beatrice Ebel '28 ran 25:28.16 to place 42nd and Caitlin Ong '26 took 44th in 25:29.06.

Grinnell heads to Rock Island, Ill., on Oct. 19 for the Regional Preview meet.
