Grinnell men's soccer team to battle Beloit in opening round of MWC Tournament

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Grinnell College's men's soccer team battled Beloit College to a 1-all draw in the regular season and will get another shot at the Buccaneers Friday afternoon when they meet in the opening round of the Midwest Conference Tournament.

The semifinal round matchup at Lake Forest College's Farwell Field is slated for 2 p.m.

Grinnell, the third seed in the four-team affair, finished league play at 4-2-2 and is 5-7-5 overall. Beloit is the second seed and had the same 4-2-2 MWC mark as Grinnell. The Buccaneers are 7-8-4 overall.

Grinnell has ridden strong defense all season, ranking third in the league in goals against average at 1.00 per outing. Beloit is right behind the Pioneers at fourth, giving up 1.13 goals per league match. Beloit is second in the MWC in scoring average at 1.875 and Grinnell is fifth with 1.375 goals a match.

Grinnell's Samuel Gojjam '27 ranks fourth in league matches with four goals, while Jack Pennachio '28 and Demi Oni '27 each have three assists to rank third. Keeper Jack Alexander '29 is second in goals against average at .880 and sixth in saves with 17.

Beloit's Eziah Hernandez is tops in the league in scoring with six goals and points with 14, while teammate Rafael Cervantes Jr. has four goals. Beloit keeper David Staats is third in the league in goals against average (1.125) and first in saves (61).

The winner of Friday's match meets either top-seeded Lake Forest College or fourth-seeded Ripon College at 1 p.m. Saturday for the title and the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
