Grinnell men race to runner-up finish at Darren Young Classic

Pioneers collect 2 event victories, 1 school record

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's men parlayed two event victories, several other high finishes and a school record into a runner-up team finish at the Darren Young Classic track and field meet Saturday.


Champs for the Pioneers at the Bear Center Field House were Jason Newman '28 in the 3000-meter run in a time of 8 minutes, 59.68 seconds and the distance medley relay of Cameron Welch-Groves '26, Ryan Boev '25, Connor Heagy '26 and Ben Abelow '28 in 10:51.03.

Ilem Leisher '27 set a new school record in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.91, bettering the previous mark of 8.96 he shared.

The Pioneers put up 135 points in the nine-team meet to finish just four points behind champ Central College. Simpson College was a distant third with 75.

Runners-up for Grinnell were Jake Logue '28 in the 60 (7.04, second all-time at GC), Sam Beck '27 in the 3000 (9:06.92), Ian Clawson '26 in the weight throw (16.53 meters), Casey Oliveira '27 in the triple jump (12.84 meters) and Rohan Thota '28 in the pole vault (4.29 meters, fifth all-time).

Luca Fornari '25 also leaped 4.29 meters in the pole vault to finish third. Also placing third were Linus O'Brien '28 in the 400 (51.68) and Jack Novelle '26 in the high jump (1.84 meters). Caden Pfister '27 and Jesse Miller '28 were fourth in the 400 and long jump with efforts of 51.85 and 6.35 meters, respectively. Also placing fourth was the 4x400 relay team of Pfister, Xavier James '25, Andy Chestovich '26 and O'Brien. They ran 3:32.94.

Jake Warren '28 was fifth in the 60 and 200 in times of 7.24 and 23.36. Miller was fifth in the 400 in 52.43 and Novelle placed the same in the triple jump at 10.96 meters.

Greyson Imm '28 and Nicholas Ouhabi '28 were seventh and eighth in the 3000 with times of 9:25.84 and 9:41.25. Oliveira finished seventh in the long jump with a leap of 6.23 meters, and Clay Glessner '28 placed eighth in the 200 in 23.76.
