Grinnell men's track and field team enjoys big performances on opening day of MWC Outdoor Championships

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Grinnell College's men's track and field team enjoyed several big performances on the opening day of the 2026 Midwest Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday.

The team's highest finishers at the Cornell College facility were Ian Clawson '26 in the hammer throw and Jake Bell '27 in the discus, each taking third place with efforts of 53.66 meters and 44.51.

Jack Lakin '29 and Aidan Michaelson '28 were fourth and sixth in the 10,000-meter run with efforts of 33 minutes, 21.92 seconds and 34:14.86, respectively.

The Pioneers were particularly impressive in the 1500, as Luke Robinson '26 and Ben Abelow '28 ran the second- and fourth-fastest times in program history with efforts of 3:54.21 and 3:56.36. They finished fifth and seventh in the race.

Clawson added a seventh-place effort in the discus with a toss of 40.17 meters. Jess Christensen '29 and Ilem Leisher '27 posted the second- and fourth-fastest times in the 110 hurdle prelims with clockings of 15.18 and 15.51. Also making the finals were Caden Pfister '27 in the 400 (seventh in 51.30), Max Jedlicka '28 in the 400 hurdles (eighth in 58.78) and Eli Grzelewski '29 in the 200 (eighth in 22.26).

George Stenberg '29 and Jesse Miller '28 posted the eighth- and 10th-best times in program history in the 100 with clockings of 10.93 and 10.96, yet didn't make the finals in the lightning-fast field.

Grinnell is fifth in the team standings after the first day with 29 points. Illinois College is the leader with 43.
