Pioneer golfers show substantial improvement on final day of Wartburg Spring Invite

WAVERLY, Iowa - Grinnell College's men's golf team showed marked improvement Saturday, bettering its score from the day before by 34 strokes at the Wartburg Spring Invite.


The Pioneers, who shot 351 on a windy Friday, came back with a 317 the following day at Prairie Links for a final score of 668.

Thornton Walker '26 was the Pioneers' top performer Saturday, recording a 2-over-par 74 for a final score of 160. Roger Smith '28 was next in line with a 75 and a final tally of 153, making him Grinnell's top finisher in the tournament with a 12th-place finish.

Kevin Carpenter '25 added a 79 on Saturday for a 179 and John Robinson '25 had an 89 for an overall score of 183.

Nathan Offerman of team champion Kirkwood Community College won the individual crown with a 142. Kirkwood shot a 588 as a team.

Grinnell is next in action April 12-13 at the Knox College Invite.
