Depth again propels Grinnell men's track and field team to victory

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Like many times this season, the Grinnell College men's track and field team boasted its depth.

The Pioneers won just three event titles Saturday, but comfortably cruised to the team crown at the DeBacker Invitational. The Pioneers piled up 165 points at the meet hosted by Mount Mercy, while Cornell College was second with 136.

Grinnell's champs were Luke Robinson '26 in the 800-meter run (1 minute, 57.98 second), Jason Newman '28 in the 5000 (16:00.65) and Jake Bell '27 in the discus (44.55 meters).

Robinson was second in the 1500 in 3:59.56, while Ben Abelow '28 took fifth in 4:09.36. Xavier James '25 was runner-up in the 400 hurdles in 57.65, the same placing as Casey Oliveira '27 in the triple jump (12.65 meters) and Jack Novelle '26 in the high jump (1.85 meters). Jacob Schomberg '28 placed fifth in the 400 hurdles in 1:01.20 and Murphy Dykstra '27 took fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 12.42 meters.

Also placing second was the 4x400 relay team of Caden Pfister '27, Andy Chestovich '26, Clay Glessner '28 and Linus O'Brien '28. Their time ws 3:25.30.

Lucas Fadden '26 sprinted to a third-place finish in the 200 in 21.66, the third-best time in program history and fastest since 1991.

Grinnell captured third through fifth place in the 3000 steeplechase with Carter Williams '25, Sebastian Manza '27 and Tyler Ching '26 in 10:37.89, 10:39.89 and 10:45.31, respectively.

David In '28 placed fourth in the 5000 in 16:18.66 and Alex Pollock '27 took fifth in 17:32.42. Ian Clawson '26 threw 50.58 meters in the hammer to place fourth and Bell was fifth in the javelin with a toss of 48.44 meters, 10th all-time at GC.
