Abelow leads the way for Grinnell men in season-opening cross country event

PELLA, Iowa - Ben Abelow '28 led a strong charge by Grinnell College Friday night in the season-opening Central Dutch Cross Country Invite.


Competing at 6000 meters, Abelow placed ninth of 97 runners in a time of 19 minutes, 29.7 seconds. His efforts helped Grinnell to third place in the team standings in the eight-team event.

Connor Heagy '26 was next in line for Grinnell, placing 11th in 19:47.8, while first-year Jack Lakin '29 was impressive in his debut by taking 17th in 19:53.3.

Also scoring for Grinnell were Sam Beck '27 and Luke Robinson '26, who were 18th and 19th in 19:54.1 and 19:54.5, respectively. Also for Grinnell, Leif Dahl '29 was 24th in 20:10.1 and Andy Chestovich '26 placed 25th in 20:14.6.

Park University won the team title with 29 points, edging the host school by two points. Central had the individual champ in Jack Brown, who ran 18:51.0. Grinnell tallied 74 points.

The Pioneers host the annual Les Duke Invitational next Saturday at the Grinnell College Golf Course.
