GC women use depth and balance to earn first MWC indoor track and field title in more than 40 years

GRINNELL, Iowa - The last time the Grinnell College women's track and field team had won a Midwest Conference Indoor Championship was more than 40 years ago.

That all changed Saturday at the Bear Center Field House as the Pioneers piled up 156 points to claim their first indoor league crown since 1985.

Additionally, Grinnell College's staff led by head coach Jeff Pedersen was named MWC Coaching Staff of the Year.

Grinnell easily defeated the runner-up and defending team champion Illinois College, which tallied 131.5 points.

Like the first day of competition, depth and balance paved the way to the Pioneers' win. Saturday's lone champ was Rajanea Landers '28, who was tops in the triple jump with a leap of 10.54 meters.

Runners-up for Grinnell were Hannah Roark '26 in the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 18.82 seconds and the 4x400 and distance medley relay teams that posted times of 4:08.95 and 12:54.14, respectively. The distance medley team, which missed winning by just .16 of a second, posted the third-best time in program history.

Distance medley team members were Beatrice Ebel '28, Emily Summers '29, Edie Broadmoore '29 and Lizzie Drew '29, while the 4x400 team included Summers, Noelle Vu '28, Tennyson Shultz '28 and Kate Solano '29.

Solano and Summers were third and fifth in the 400 in 1:00.77 and 1:01.72. Summers' time is 10th in GC history. Kylie Galowitz '26 threw 15.28 in the weight throw to place third. That throw ranks second in GC history.

In the triple jump, Steph Kama-Kama '28 was fourth with a leap of 10.17 meters and Solano took fifth, also at 10.17. Kama-Kama jumped up to seventh on GC's all-time leader board.

Vu, Shultz and Carolina Corcoran '29 were fifth, seventh and eighth in the 800 with times of 2:21.44, 2:24.05 and 2:25.91. Vu's time ranks fourth in GC history.

Morgan Karow '26 was fifth in the 3000 in 10:21.49, a clocking that ranks fifth in GC history. Roark took seventh in 10:29.12 and Talia Harrison '26 ran 10:33.50, the ninth-best time at GC.

In the 60 hurdles, Jessie Goodman placed fifth in 9.87 and Lily Mayo '28 took eighth in 10.45. Mayo's time ranks seventh in GC history. Keelin Swisher '29 was fourth in the 60 in 8.06 and Landers placed seventh in the 200 in 26.90.
