Grinnell women's soccer team wins 10th MWC crown with victory

Box Score The Grinnell College women's soccer team claimed its 10th Midwest Conference title, and its first since 2006, with a 5-0 shutout of Knox College Sunday at Springer Field.

The Pioneers finish league play with a 7-1-1 mark and are tri-champs along with St. Norbert College and Carroll University.

Grinnell, 10-5-2 overall, had already qualified for the MWC Tournament for the first time since 2008 and will open action at 11 a.m. Friday against Carroll at St. Norbert.

Grinnell, which has demonstrated its balance this season with 19 different players having either a goal or assist, continued that trend Sunday as five women had goals. Additionally, 14 players took at least one shot in the contest.

Included in that goal-scoring group was Cynthia Dominguez '12 (pictured), one of six Pioneers celebrating Senior Day.

Grinnell opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Morgan Sullivan '15 found the back of the net. She fired a 30-yard shot from outside the box on the left side. The ball went toward the upper-right portion of the net, was juggled by the keeper and went into the goal. It was her first score of the season.

Dominguez added a goal in the 19th minute. After Rachel Koester '13 delivered a corner kick, the ball was batted a bit before Dominguez put it into the bottom right part of the net for her third goal of the season.

It remained 2-0 at halftime before Grinnell scored three more times.

Hannah Safter '14 scored her third goal of the season in the 68th minute when she delivered from the top of the box.

Abby Jaeger '14 scored in the 74th minute when Elle Silverman '15 sent a through ball to her. Jaeger one-touched it and shot from the right side for the score, her second of the year.

Just two minutes later, Silverman scored her second goal of the year on an assist by Kirsten Louthan '12. Louthan crossed the ball to the top of the box to Silverman, who one-touched it and stuck it into the left side of the goal.

Grinnell took 29 shots while allowing Knox just one. Jaeger had five shots for Grinnell, Becca Carter '12, Nicole Sipfle '13, Julia Sauerhaft '15 and Silverman all had three and Dominguez and Safter each had two.

Grinnell keeper Jordan Young '14 played the first 72 minutes and Devon Manley '15 went the rest of the way to combine for the shutout.

The five goals for Grinnell equals a season-high.

With the loss, Knox is 1-7-1 in the MWC and 3-13-1 overall.
