Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – Not only did the Grinnell College women's soccer team celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, but the Pioneers also celebrated a jump toward the top of the Midwest Conference standings.
Grinnell shut out Lawrence University 5-0 at Springer Field to improve to 6-1 in the league and 6-6-1 overall. Meanwhile, previous MWC leader Lake Forest College lost at Monmouth College to fall to 7-1-1 in league play. That means Grinnell controls its own destiny as it pursues a MWC title.
Two seniors scored goals on their special day, as
Kathryn Vincent '13 hit the back of the net in the 58th minute and
Rachel Weinstein '13 concluded the scoring in the 87th minute. Weinstein's goal was particularly thrilling, as the All-MWC selection was playing for the first time since early September after suffering an injury.
Katy Oldach '16 made the most of her first start at keeper as she earned the shutout. She had one save as Grinnell dominated the shots battle 15-1.
Pauline Zheng '14 got Grinnell on the board first in the 25th minute with her second goal of the season, which was assisted by Mackenzie Shanahan '14. On the play, Shanahan crossed the ball into the box. The Pioneers missed on a chance for the header, but Zheng got to the ball for the shot, which she put to the left side of the post for the score.
Grinnell made it 2-0 in the 42nd minute when
Dabney Hofammann '15 scored her third goal of the season on an assist by
Julia Sauerhaft '15. Sauerhaft fed a through ball into the box from the left side, where Hofammann got it and struck it into the corner of the post where Lawrence's keeper couldn't reach it.
The score remained 2-0 through halftime, but Grinnell upped the lead to 3-0 in the 58th minute on Vincent's third goal of the season. On the play, Vincent collected the ball on the right side of the goal, dribbled past her opponent and sent it opposite side to the left corner of the net.
Grinnell made it 4-0 in the 75th minute when
Sarah Jensen '15 scored her second goal of the year on an assist by Murphy-Geiss. Murphy-Geiss worked the ball to the right side and fed it into Jensen. The keeper came up on the play and Jensen delivered a chip shot to the left side of the goal for the score.
The Pioneers concluded the scoring in the 87th minute when Weinstein scored her first goal of the season on Shanahan's second assist of the contest. Shanahan worked the ball toward the box on the left side and delivered a perfect pass to Weinstein. Weinstein got the ball in the box, worked past her defender and beat the keeper with a shot, sending the Pioneers into celebration.
With the setback, Lawrence dipped to 2-5 in the MWC and 3-11 in all contests.
Grinnell returns to Springer Field Sunday for a big game against St. Norbert College. The contest begins at 11 a.m.
