Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College football team fell behind 14-0 after one quarter and couldn't recover as Lawrence University posted a 24-14 victory at Rosenbloom Field Saturday afternoon.
Sam Poulos '16 and
Jacob Meixler '15 accounted for both of Grinnell's touchdowns on passes of 11 and 68 yards.
The Vikings, who led 17-0 at halftime and 21-7 after three quarters, are now 2-5 in the Midwest Conference and 2-6 in all games. The Pioneers have the same mark.
Luke Barthelmess had a big day for the winners, passing for 207 yards and running for another 103.
Poulos completed 12-of-27 passes for 156 yards, while Meixler had 113 yards on seven receptions.
TJ Schaid '13 had his second 100-plus yard rushing game in the last three outings as he gained 111 yards on 25 carries.
Defensively,
David Ternes '15 had a game-high 15 stops and a sack while
Drew Blumberg '13 had 11 tackles and
Richard Renteria '15 nine.
After trailing 17-0 at intermission, Grinnell didn't waste time getting on the board in the third period by putting together a seven-play, 62-yard drive. Schaid had a 39-yard run on the drive, which was capped by Poulos throwing 11 yards to Meixler.
Daniel Munger '15 kicked the point after, making it 17-7 with 11:47 to go in the third period.
Lawrence responded with a score late in the third frame before Grinnell concluded the scoring in the fourth quarter on Poulos' 68-yard pass to Meixler on the first play of a drive. Munger's extra point made it 24-14 with 6:28 left in the game.
The Pioneers got the ball back later in an effort to rally, but gave up possession on downs.
Grinnell wraps up the home portion of its 2012 slate next Saturday when St. Norbert College visits for a Senior Day game. The kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
