Pioneer women's soccer team collects crucial home victory to earn spot in MWC Tourney

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College women's soccer team used a dominating performance Sunday to propel itself into the Midwest Conference Tournament for the second year in a row.

With a 3-0 victory over Ripon College at Springer Field, Grinnell finished MWC play with a 7-3 mark and a fourth-place tie with Carroll University in the league standings. Grinnell advanced to the tourney over Carroll due to a victory over the Pioneers earlier in the season.

Patty Murphy-Geiss '14 sparked Grinnell's offense with two goals to boost her season total to five. Kathryn Vincent '13 had the other, also moving her to a team-high five scores on the season.

Keepers Jordan Young '14 and Katy Oldach '16 combined on the shutout, the Pioneers' seventh of the season.

Vincent opened the scoring in the 19th minute when she was tripped and awarded a penalty kick, which she struck hard into the top right side of the goal.

The score remained 1-0 at halftime before Murphy-Geiss scored in the 55th and 89th minutes. On the first goal, Abby Jaeger '14 gave Murphy-Geiss a through ball right in the middle of the box, where she had the keeper one-on-one. She struck the ball to the right side of the net for the goal. It was Jaeger's second assist of the season.

The second goal from Murphy-Geiss came after Rachael Koester '13 shot the ball, which was punched out by the keeper. However, Murphy-Geiss was there for the rebound and fired the ball in for the easy goal.

Grinnell won the shots battle 22-11, with Dabney Hofammann '15 taking four shots, Vincent and Koester three apiece and Murphy-Geiss, Jaeger and Nicole Sipfle '13 two each.

Young had two saves while working the first half at keeper for the Pioneers, who are 7-8-1 overall, and Oldach added four saves in the second half.

Ripon finished up at 4-5-1 in the MWC and 10-6-2 in all games.

Grinnell will take on MWC regular-season champ Lake Forest College in the MWC Tourney semifinals Friday at Lake Forest.
