Box Score WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Grinnell College women's soccer outcome at Carroll University Sunday proved to be big on many fronts.
Not only did the Pioneers get their first goal, and win, of the 2012 campaign, they also gave coach Heather Benning '96 (pictured) her milestone 150th career victory with the 1-0 outcome.
Additionally, the visitors posted a victory on the road against one of the perennial Midwest Conference title contenders as they improved to 1-1 in the league and 1-4-1 overall.
Grinnell got the only goal it needed in the seventh minute when
Elle Silverman '15 found the back of the net for an unassisted score.
Jordan Young '14 and
Katy Oldach '16 combined for the shutout at keeper for Grinnell, each working a half. Young had two saves and Oldach three.
Grinnell had four shots in the game, with others besides Silverman's coming from
Kathryn Vincent '13,
Rachael Koester '13 and
Maddie Gray '16.
Carroll, which managed 11 shots, fell to 1-1 in the MWC and 4-2-1 in all contests.
Benning, already Grinnell's all-time leader in women's soccer coaching victories, improved to 150-88-15 since taking over the team in 1998.
Grinnell steps out of conference play Thursday for a contest at Central College in Pella. Action begins at 5 p.m.
The Pioneers then return home for four games in a row, beginning with an 11 a.m. test Saturday against Illinois College.
