Stifling defensive performance helps Grinnell shut down Lawrence

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College women's basketball team rode a strong defensive performance to an easy 60-38 victory over Lawrence University Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium.

The Pioneers limited Lawrence to just 8 percent shooting in the first half, as the Vikings hit just 2-of-25 field goal attempts. They were just 20.3 percent for the game.

Offensive, Grinnell got a double-double from Tolu Alabi '13. She had a game-high 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds while also grabbing three steals.

Alissa Hirsh '16 added 11 points for the Pioneers, who moved to 5-4 in the Midwest Conference and 6-7 in all games, while Abby Jaeger '14 scored nine.

Michelle Briggs '13 came up with game-highs of 13 rebounds and three blocks, Elizabeth Burnett '13 dished out two assists and Cristal Coleman '15 and Karen Gogins '13 had two steals each.

Two players had nine points each for the Vikings, who fell to 0-8 in the league and 1-12 in all games.

The outcome was never in question, as Grinnell bolted out to a 9-0 lead as Jaeger made two free throws, Hirsh drained a 3-pointer and layup and Jaeger drove for a layup.

Lawrence did come within 12-7 with 9:52 left, but was held scoreless the rest of the half by the Pioneer defense. In that span, Grinnell forced four turnovers and 13 missed field goal tries.

In the meantime, Alabi scored eight points, Coleman and Anne Boldt '16 had three each and Briggs and Jordan Matosky '16 had two as the Pioneers took a 30-7 lead into the locker room.

The Pioneers built their lead as large as 26 in the second half before winning by 22.

Grinnell now has two MWC road games in a row, first meeting Illinois College on Tuesday at Jacksonville, Ill. Game time is 5 p.m.
