Pioneer women's soccer team hands Monmouth first MWC loss

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College women's soccer team did what no other squad in the Midwest Conference has done this season.

The Pioneers defeated Monmouth College.

Grinnell moved atop the league standings with a 1-0 shutout of the Fighting Scots Saturday at Springer Field. The Pioneers are now 5-1-1 in league play and 8-4-1 in all contests, while Monmouth dipped to 5-1 in the MWC and 9-4 in all matches.

It was the seventh shutout of the year for the Pioneers, and third in a row.

Nora Sahel '17 scored the lone goal of the contest in the 75th minute, her team-high fifth of the year. On the play, Eva Smith '16 received the ball on the far side outside the box and led Sahel with a perfect pass down the center of the box.

Seeing the one-on-one opportunity with the keeper, Sahel won the battle and fired in the shot.

Others getting shots in the game for Grinnell were Kristen Stacey '16, Hannah Safter '14, Carolyn Silverman '17, Hannah Truesdale '17 and Sarah Jensen '15.

Grinnell keepers Jordan Young '14 and Katy Oldach '16 combined on the shutout, with Young getting two saves and Oldach being credited with three.

Grinnell is back in action Sunday, taking on non-conference foe Coe College in Cedar Rapids. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
