Pioneers see successful soccer campaign end at St. Norbert

Box Score DE PERE, Wis. – The Grinnell College women's soccer team saw its successful campaign come to an end Friday afternoon with a 3-1 loss to St. Norbert College in the opening round of the 2013 Midwest Conference Tournament.

The Green Knights got two first-half goals from Katie Avond in the 14th and 24th minutes for a 2-0 halftime lead, and Vanden Avond completed the hat trick in the 79th minute for her 35th goal of the season.

Grinnell's goal came in the 84th minute from Patty Murphy-Geiss '14 on a penalty kick. It was her team-high eighth of the season.

St. Norbert won the shots battle 19-7. Eva Smith '16 had three shots for the Pioneers, while Murphy-Geiss, Nora Sahel '17, Sarah Jensen '15 and Dabney Hofammann '15 had one each.

Jordan Young '14 played keeper for Grinnell in the first half and had four saves, while Katy Oldach '16 had two in the second half.

Top-seeded St. Norbert improved to 13-4-2 and will play Monmouth College Saturday for the title.

The Pioneers, seeded fourth in the tourney, wound up 11-7-1. The 11 wins are the most for Grinnell since the 2008 season.
