Pioneers' offense erupts in 11-0 victory over Blackburn

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College women's soccer team saw its offense erupt in an 11-0 shutout of Blackburn College Saturday afternoon at Springer Field.

The 11 goals were the most by a Pioneer team since a 2007 victory over Knox College. Patty Murphy-Geiss '14 and Nora Sahel '17 scored two goals apiece for the Pioneers, who improved to 1-1.

Grinnell's defense was also stellar, holding Blackburn without a shot while the Pioneers had 43 themselves.

Murphy-Geiss scored both her goals at the 15-minute mark. Her first came when she took a pass from Eden Marek '15 on the near side and immediately fired it into the top right corner of the net. Just 50 seconds later, Abby Jaeger '14 delivered a corner kick which Murphy-Geiss dribbled and then faked the defender before firing over the keeper.

Just 30 seconds later, Hannah Safter '14 gained possession of the ball after Blackburn failed to clear it from the center of the box. She fired a shot over the leaping keeper to make it 3-0.

At the 20-minute mark, Eva Smith '16 received a pass on the far side outside the box, dribbled it through three defenders and shot the ball into the goal. Elle Silverman '15 and Maggie Mamantov '16 finished the half's scoring with goals in the 39th and 42nd minutes.

Silverman received a pass and fired a shot into the top right corner of the goal, while Mamantov took a cross from Smith on the near side just outside the box and put a shot in the top right corner of the net. That made it 6-0 at halftime.

The Pioneers were not even close to being done with their scoring, though. Sahel scored in the 52nd minute when Caroline Silverman '17 dribbled into the box on the far side, tapped it toward the middle of the box to Sahel, who fired it in the net.

In the 58th minute Julia Sauerhaft '15 scored when Murphy-Geiss got a pass from Claire Ruegg '16 just inside the box. Murphy-Geiss was defended and left a pass for Sauerhaft, who sent a shot into the far corner to make it 8-0.

Sahel got her second goal of the game in the 59th minute when she took a pass from Murphy-Geiss from the center of the box to the far inside and scored, making it 9-0. In the 76th minute, Jaeger scored an unassisted goal when she got the ball in the center of the box, took several dribbles and then shot.

Dabney Hofammann '15 finished the scoring in the 83rd minute when Mackenzie Shanahan '14 dribbled on the far side of the box and centered a pass to her, allowing her to put the ball in the net.

Grinnell used three keepers, Jordan Young '14, Katy Oldach '16 and Devon Manley '14.

The Pioneers have two more home contests this coming weekend, hosting Principia College and Buena Vista University at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
