Grinnell women's soccer team wins defensive battle with Carroll

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College women's soccer team worked its way to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Carroll University in a defensive battle Sunday at Springer Field.

The Pioneers' defense was sharp throughout, only allowing four Carroll shots. Keepers Jordan Young '14 and Katy Oldach '16 each played a half and had saves as they guided the hosts to their third shutout victory of the season.

The lone goal of the game came from Kristen Stacey '16 in the 38th minute. On the play, Izzie Pfeiffer '16 put a high cross from the nearside corner to the far side of the box. Stacey headed the pass towards the top corner of the goal and the ball was barely touched, but not stopped, by the leaping Carroll keeper as it worked its way into the net.

It was Stacey's third goal of the season and Pfeiffer's first assist.

Elle Silverman '15 had two of Grinnell's six shots, while Maddie Gray '16, Eva Smith '16, Julia Sauerhaft '16 and Stacey had one apiece.

Grinnell improved to 2-1 in the Midwest Conference and 5-3 overall, while Carroll dipped to 1-1 in league play and 4-4 in all contests.

The Pioneers return to Springer Field Saturday to entertain Beloit College in a league matchup. Action begins at 11 a.m.
