Grinnell women's soccer team shuts down Beloit to move to 3-1 in MWC play

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's women's soccer team improved to 3-1 in the Midwest Conference after shutting down Beloit College 6-0 at Springer Field Saturday.

Nora Sahel '17 had two goals for Grinnell, giving her four on the season, while Patty Murphy-Geiss '14, Eva Smith '16, Hannah Safter '14 and Abby Jaeger '14 had one each. Murphy-Geiss now has a team-high five goals.

Keepers Jordan Young '14 and Katy Oldach '16 each played a half while keeping the Buccaneers scoreless.

Murphy-Geiss led off the scoring in the 19th minute when Claire Ruegg '17 kicked a long ball from well outside the box at the keeper. The keeper misplayed it, allowing Murphy-Geiss to tap it into the goal.

Grinnell added another goal in the 23rd minute when Smith got a feed from Kristen Stacey '16 and fired a shot that just went through the keeper's fingers.

The score remained 2-0 at halftime before Grinnell scored in the 51st minute as Murphy-Geiss took a corner kick from the near side. The ball was batted around the box until Sahel tapped it in.

Grinnell then scored three goals within five minutes, beginning with Safter's in the 82nd minute. Taking a pass from Murphy-Geiss, Safter fired a shot from 20 yards out that hooked in to the far corner.

Three minutes later, Murphy-Geiss took a pass on the far side from Eden Marek '15. She crossed it to the near side, where Jaeger kicked it into the net.

Sahel completed the scoring not even two minutes later when she fired a shot from well outside the box that went into the top corner of the net.

Grinnell won the shots battle 18-2, with Safter taking four and Stacey, Pauline Zheng '14, Jaeger and Hannah Truesdale '17 getting three each.

Grinnell is now 6-3 overall. Beloit fell to 2-6 in all games and 0-2 in the MWC.

The Pioneers step out of league play Sunday with a contest at Augustana College. Action begins at 11 a.m.
