Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College women's soccer team solidified its chances of qualifying for the Midwest Conference Tournament by stopping Lawrence University 2-0 Saturday afternoon at Springer Field.
Carolyn Silverman '17 and
Francesca Varias '18 each scored in the Senior Day event for the Pioneers, who improved to 5-2 in the league and 9-6. It was Grinnell's third shutout win in a row and seventh shutout of the season.
Silverman opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. After Silverman missed a penalty kick, Varias got the ball and shot but couldn't score. Silverman then collected the ball and fired it into the net for her team-high seventh goal of the season.
It remained 1-0 through halftime. In the second half, at the 64-minute mark,
Dabney Hofammann '15 took a cross and worked it over to Varias, who fired into the net for her second goal of the season.
Katy Oldach '16 had four saves at keeper for Grinnell.
The Pioneers dominated the shots battle 21-7. Silverman had six of those, Varias took four and
Elle Silverman '15 and Hofammann added three each.
With the setback, Lawrence fell to 2-2-2 in the MWC and 4-8-2 overall.
Grinnell has another key MWC contest Sunday when St. Norbert College visits Springer Field. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m.
