Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College women's soccer team opened Midwest Conference play on the right note Saturday afternoon, shutting out Knox College 3-0 at Springer Field.
The win, Grinnell's third in a row, moves the Pioneers' record to 4-3. Knox dipped to 2-5 in a game that was its MWC opener, as well.
Katy Oldach '16 and
Devon Manley '15 combined on the shutout for Grinnell at the keeper spot. Oldach worked 71 minutes and Manley the rest of the way, with the latter keeper earning a save.
Grinnell got on the board first when
Kristen Stacey '16 scored her second goal of the season in the 10th minute.
Carolyn Silverman '17 began the play with a pass up the field to Stacey, who used a stutter move to get around the keeper before firing the ball into the goal.
Grinnell added another goal in the 29th minute by
Julia Sauerhaft '15, her first score of the year.
Andie Semlow '16 began the action with a pass up to
Lilyrose Weiss '18, who then worked the ball to Sauerhaft, who delivered a nice shot over the keeper's hands.
The score remained 2-0 until halftime. In the second half, Grinnell completed the scoring on
Nora Sahel's '17 goal in the 53rd minute. Semlow recorded her second assist of the match when she worked a pass to Sahel, who used a few nice moves before putting the ball past the keeper into the net for her first goal of the season.
The Pioneers won the shots battle 23-4, with Sauerhaft taking five shots, Stacey three and
Elle Silverman '15,
Eva Smith '16,
Sarah Jensen '15 and
Francesca Varias '18 two each.
The Pioneers step out of league play Sunday when they host Wartburg College. Action at Springer Field begins at 1:30 p.m.
