Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College women's soccer team continued its perfect start in Midwest Conference play with a 3-0 blanking of Illinois College at Springer Field.
Both wins by the Pioneers in league play have been shutouts as Grinnell moved to 2-0 in the MWC and 5-4 overall. Illinois College fell to 0-1 in league play and 6-3 overall.
The Pioneers grabbed a 2-0 halftime lead on goals by
Carolyn Silverman '17 in the 22nd minute and
Annika Helverson '18 in the 39th.
Dabney Hofammann '15, who assisted Silverman's goal, got control of the ball in the middle of the field on the attacking side. She passed it through to Silverman, who dribbled past her defender and got a one-on-one with the keeper before calmly kicking it in for her fourth goal of the season.
On Helverson's goal, a corner kick by
Lauren Hurley '18 was deflected around the box before Helverson kicked it in from 10 yards out. It was her first goal as a Pioneer.
Izzie Pfeiffer '16 finished off the scoring with a goal in the 84th minute, her first of the year.
Kitt Richards '18, who had the assist, had a defender in front of her in the box before dropping the ball off to Pfeiffer on the far side of the box. Pfeiffer kicked it just inside the far post for the goal.
Katy Oldach '16 played keeper for Grinnell and had four saves in earning the shutout.
Grinnell won the shots battle 16-9, with Silverman taking four shots and Hofammann three.
Grinnell continues league play Sunday when Cornell College visits Springer Field. Action begins at 3 p.m.
