GALESBURG, Ill. – Grinnell College's women's soccer team is riding a huge wave of momentum in the late season, and the Pioneers are optimistic they'll continue that trend at this weekend's Midwest Conference Tournament.
The Pioneers, in the midst of a five-game winning streak, are the tourney's third seed and will play second-seeded Lake Forest College at 11 a.m. Friday in Galesburg. Top-seeded Knox College and fourth seed St. Norbert College square off at 2 p.m., with those winners meeting at 2 p.m. Saturday for the title and the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
Grinnell and Lake Forest played 110 minutes of double-overtime soccer to a 0-0 deadlock during the regular season.
Grinnell, 9-6-2 and returning to the MWC Tourney after missing out last year, is led offensively by
Carolyn Silverman '17. She is fifth in the MWC in goals with five and sixth in points with 11.
Hannah Truesdale '17 has three goals in league play and
Valencia Alvarez '20 two.
Annika Helverson '18 is tops for Grinnell in assists with two.
Regan Kasprak '19 has stepped up big at keeper after filling in due to an injury. She has marks of .867 for goals percentage, third-best in the MWC, and .826 saves percentage, which is fourth.
Lake Forest enters Friday's contest at 10-7-1. Susie Baca is fifth in the conference in goals with five and sixth in points with 11, while Kayla Wuest is ninth in goals with four. Jo Hendriksen ranks third in assists with five and Kyle Chavarria is seventh with three.
Rachel Tenuta is fourth in the league in goals against average at 1.02 and eighth in saves percentage with a mark of .719.
