GALESBURG, Ill. - Grinnell's College's cross country teams dominated the 2019 Midwest Conference Championships Saturday and afterwards received their just rewards.
Andrew Nickeson '23 (left) was named the Men's Newcomer of the Year, while Grinnell won Coaching Staff of the Year for both women and men with
Evelyn and
Will Freeman at the helm.
Grinnell's women scored 31 points to outdistance runner-up Monmouth College by 26 points. It was the league-high 20th MWC title for the Pioneers, with
Evelyn Freeman coaching 18 of those squads.
On the men's side, Grinnell had 65 points to beat Monmouth by 14. It marked the Pioneers' league-high 33rd MWC title, with
Will Freeman coaching 30 of those teams. Together, the Freemans have coached championship teams in the same season 14 times.
Nickeson led Grinnell's men's team with a fourth-place finish in the field of 98 runners. He had a time of 27 minutes, 23.3 seconds over the 8-kilometer course and was just 29 seconds behind the winner.
