Grinnell football team shows progress against Fighting Scots

Box Score MONMOUTH, Ill. - The progress can be gauged by the numbers.

Although Grinnell College's football team lost 42-7 to perennial Midwest Conference powerhouse Monmouth College Saturday afternoon, the Pioneers showed they are moving in a positive direction.

Danny Carter's '22 second-quarter touchdown was the first TD Grinnell has scored against the Fighting Scots since the 2012 season, and the point total was the highest  against Monmouth since that year. Grinnell had been shut out four times in a row by Monmouth, dating back to the 2015 season.

Monmouth led 14-0 after the first period, but Grinnell cut the gap in half with 5:13 to go in the half when Carter raced into the end zone from 7 yards out. Nick Rhinehart's '25 point after kick made it 14-7.

Carter's score was set up by a pass interception by Jio Hong '25 at the Monmouth 32-yard line. On a key third-and-11 play, Grayson Woodhouse '24 found Rhinehart for an 11-yard completion. Later, Woodhouse hit Clayton Burton '23 with a 13-yard completion and three plays later, Carter found the end zone.

The Fighting Scots got another touchdown before halftime to lead 20-7 and went up 33-7 by the end of the third period.

Woodhouse had a solid day through the air, completing 16-of-23 passes for 168 yards. Dustin Saia '22 caught three passes for 96 yards and Rhinehart had four catches for 45 yards. Carter was Grinnell's top rusher with 21 yards.

The Pioneers had a true team effort on defense, as Hugh Werner '25, Blady Cavazos '25 and Luke Porter '23 all had six tackles and Luke Stefan '25 and Charlie Henehan '24 five apiece. Porter also forced a fumble.

Grinnell (0-2) has its 2021 home opener next Saturday when Lawrence University visits Rosenbloom Field.
