GRINNELL, Iowa –
Sabrina Tang '23, who collected numerous honors at Grinnell College, has just added another.
Today, Tang has been named the 2022-23 Midwest Conference Student-Athlete of the Year for Women's Sports/Woman of the Year.
Tang is just the fourth Grinnellian to earn the award, joining Morgan Bober (2011-12), Claire Reeder (2010-11) and Rachel Moskowitz (2005-06).
As the MWC Student-Athlete of the Year winner, Tang will move forward to be considered for the Division III Commissioners Association (DIIICA) Athlete of the Year Award and NCAA Woman of the Year, along with other athletes across the country.
The NCAA established the Woman of the Year Award in 1991 to celebrate the achievements of women in intercollegiate athletics. The award is unique because it recognizes not only the athletics achievements of outstanding young women, but also their academic achievements, community service and leadership.
NCAA member institutions from all three divisions nominated their own woman of the year. To be eligible, these women must have competed and earned a varsity letter in an NCAA-sponsored sport and must have completed eligibility in their primary sport.
This spring, Tang became Grinnell's first two-time NCAA Division III Tournament singles qualifier and the first-ever to make it in doubles (with partner
Ioanna Giannakou). Tang was a two-time All-American, two-time Midwest ITA Regional champ and twice competed in the prestigious ITA Cup.
Other feats included setting a program record for career singles victories with 76, finishing third in Grinnell history with 130 combined wins and 14
th in doubles victories with 54. Tang's career winning percentages in singles and doubles of .792 and .720 rank eighth and 11
th, respectively.
Tang, who finished with five MWC titles between singles and doubles play, also guided the Pioneers to four conference team titles and three trips to the NCAA D-III Team Tournament.
A biochemistry and French major with a concentration in neuroscience, Tang served as co-leader of Grinnell's Asexual and Aromantic Support Network and was a member of the Asian-American Association. Tang also assisted with activities at the Mayflower Community and played violin in chamber ensembles.
