Pioneer football team falls to Monmouth

Box Score MONMOUTH, Ill. – Host Monmouth College shot out to a 28-0 first-period lead and never looked back in a 65-3 victory over Grinnell College in Midwest Conference football action Saturday afternoon.

Grinnell's lone score came on a 32-yard field goal by Graham Fisher '16 in the second period.

Sam Poulos '16 completed 16-of-28 passes for 123 yards for Grinnell. Jake O'Polka '15 had four catches for 47 yards, while Jacob Meixler '15 and Emmi Sandoval '16 had two catches each. David Ternes '15 led the defense with seven tackles and an interception, while Kevin Hwang '14, Max Keller '14, Jacob Beecher '16 and Seth Gustafson '14 had six tackles.

Grinnell's scoring drive, which began near the end of the first period, included a 20-yard pass and 12-yard pass from Poulos to O'Polka, as well as an 11-yard run by Jacob Bernholtz '17. Fisher's field goal came at the 12:24 mark, but Monmouth scored two more touchdowns in the period to make it 42-13 at halftime.

Grinnell is now 1-3 in the MWC and 1-4 overall, while Monmouth moved to 2-2 in league play and 2-3 overall. The Pioneers host Ripon College next Saturday at Rosenbloom Field. Action begins at 1 p.m.
