Box Score DE PERE, Wis. – Grinnell College trailed St. Norbert College by just 10 points at halftime, but the host Green Knights pulled away after that for a 23-0 Midwest Conference football victory.
The Green Knights clinched at least a share of the MWC crown with the win while improving to 8-0 in the league and 8-1 overall. Grinnell fell to 2-6 in MWC play and 2-7 overall.
Grinnell's defense came up big, limiting the Green Knights to more than 150 yards under their season average. St. Norbert managed just 185 yards of total offense.
David Ternes '15 had 13 tackles and forced a fumble to lead the Pioneers, while
Colton Feller '14 added 11 stops and a forced fumble.
Terrel Jones '17 tallied eight tackles and
Daniel Ryerson '15 had seven.
Richard Renteria '15 forced a fumble, while
Kevin Hwang '14 and
Andrew Clark '14 both had interceptions.
Offensively,
TJ Goetz '14 passes for 159 yards while completing 20 passes, while
Jake O'Polka '15 caught seven aerials for 66 yards and
Emmi Sandoval '16 had five catches for 32 yards. St. Norbert intercepted five passes on the day.
St. Norbert got a touchdown and field goal in the first period for a 10-0 edge. The second period was scoreless, though Grinnell did drive to St. Norbert's 5-yard line before settling for a field goal try which was blocked.
The half ended with the hosts leading 10-0 before they added a touchdown in the third period for a 17-0 lead. Grinnell drove to the Green Knights' 28-yard line early in the fourth period before the drive stalled.
St. Norbert got two field goals in the fourth period to account for the final score.
Grinnell concludes its season next Saturday when Cornell College visits Rosenbloom Field for Senior Day. Game time is noon.
