Box Score MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The Grinnell College women's soccer team displayed an offensive explosion Thursday in shutting down Cornell College 6-0 in Midwest Conference play.
The goal total is the most for the Pioneers since tallying eight in a 2014 game. Grinnell, which had scored eight goals this season before Thursday, upped its league mark to 2-0-1 while evening its overall record to 4-4-2. Cornell is 2-8 overall.
While the offense was amazing, so was Grinnell's defense.
Regan Kasprak '19 posted her second shutout in a row at keeper and has given up just one goal in the past four games. She turned away five Ram shots on Thursday.
Six different players got into the scoring act for their first goals of the year for the Pioneers, who led 3-0 at halftime.
Shaina Zarkin-Scott '18 opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, and
Kitt Richards '18 added to the lead with a score in the 38th minute.
It looked as if it would stay 2-0 through halftime before
Jordan Maddaus '19 found the back of the net with just 2 seconds to go in the half. Richards assisted the goal.
In the second half,
Hannah Truesdale '17 made it 4-0 with a goal in the 52nd minute and
Gwen Holtzman '19 added a goal in the 71st minute on an assist by
Annika Helverson '18.
Juliet Torres '19 finished off the scoring with a goal with less than a minute to go.
Grinnell dominated the shots battle 22-9, with Truesdale taking four and Richards three.
Carolyn Silverman '17, Torres,
Nora Sahel '17 and Maddaus chipped in with two apiece.
Of the shots, 13 of the Pioneers' were on goal compared to five for Cornell.
The Pioneers play their first home conference contest Saturday when Illinois College visits Springer Field. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m.
